Flooding throughout the region, combined with continued rain and a forecast for thunderstorms all weekend long, have forced the postponement of Saturday’s event at Jennerstown Speedway Complex. The return of winged Sprint Cars to the Laurel Highlands, will now take place on September 15, 2018, as the speedway will remain silent and soggy, this Saturday June 23.
“We are very disappointed that the much anticipated winged Sprint Car event will not happen as scheduled this weekend,” Jennerstown Speedway Promoter Mike Lysakowski stated. “The amount of rain that saturated the property Wednesday and Thursday created situations we have never witnessed before. Water was rushing across the speedway, the pits, the parking lot, and the access roads at a dangerous level. With local roads closed overnight and many families suffering losses in the flooding of nearby towns, we are thankful that no significant damage was done to our facility and our thoughts and prayers are with those local families who are facing cleanup and restoration expenses and chores.”
The forecast for Saturday, which displays great certainty of heavy storms, is the other chief factor in the postponement of this event. A couple of the Sprint Car race teams were set to commute more than 14 hours to arrive at Jennerstown Speedway, and a majority of the teams are based in the Midwest. With heavy rains moving toward Jennerstown on Saturday, both the Sprint Car race teams and our regional racers that compete each Saturday, have virtually no hope of a dry surface on which to race.
“This early decision, while difficult and disappointing, is our genuine best effort to do the right thing for everyone involved,” Xtreme Sprint Tour President Jim Hanks declared. “Whenever possible, we try to avoid unnecessary and avoidable lost time and travel expenses for both our race teams and valued fans. Based on the forecast that predicts rain and thunderstorms for the event date, the track and MSR have determined that it is the best decision to postpone the event rather than ignore the risk and forecast of probable bad weather and a potential parking problem.”
Advance tickets, already purchased for the event will be honored on September 15, when the winged Sprint Cars join the agenda for “Champions Night 2018.” All five weekly racing divisions’ Champions will be crowned after the final points races, and the Super Cup Stock Car Series season will conclude on the same night. Now, with the addition of the Must See Racing Xtreme Sprint Cars, two separate nationally televised touring series will compete on the same night, as part of Jennerstown Speedway’s 2018 finale in September. Racing will resume on Saturday, June 30, with “Motor Mountain Mania” plus and Enduro race. Visit www.jennerstown.org for more information.
